Let’s get one thing straight: being a mum is the single most important job on the planet. Yep, I said it. And no, I’m not just talking about the miracle of growing a tiny human or catching vomit mid-air without flinching (though those are definitely superpowers). I’m talking about the fact that mums are literally shaping the future—raising the leaders, innovators, and decent human beings of tomorrow.

So why does society treat motherhood like a side hustle you do on your lunch break?

The Modern Mum's Impossible Job Description
Here’s what the world seems to expect from mums these days:
1. Work like you don’t have kids.
2. Parent like you don’t have a job.
3. Look like you have a personal trainer, chef, and stylist on speed dial.
4. Smile through it all like you’ve just guzzled a gallon of self-care juice.

It’s illogical, right? And yet, this is the unspoken (and totally bonkers) expectation placed on mothers today. Society expects you to:
  • Raise kind, emotionally intelligent children.
  • Excel in your career.
  • Maintain a Pinterest-worthy home.
  • A*nd somehow still find time to exfoliate.

Oh, and don’t you dare ask for help, because "it takes a village" is apparently just something people say when they want to sound wise.

    Where Is the Village?
Seriously, where is it? Did it get lost on the way to daycare drop-off? Because last time I checked, mums are doing everything from school runs to career runs solo. The village has been replaced by an endless parade of Instagram posts telling you to “enjoy every moment” while your toddler has a meltdown in the pasta aisle at Woolies.

It’s time to acknowledge a hard truth: mums need support, not unsolicited advice about essential oils or sleep training.

    The Mental Load of Motherhood
Being a mum isn’t just a full-time job - it’s about 12 jobs crammed into one. You’re the chef, chauffeur, therapist, event planner, and human Google all rolled into one. And let’s not forget the mental load:
  • Remembering every birthday, snack preference, and lost sock.
  • Managing school events, doctor’s appointments, and meal plans.
  • Carrying the emotional weight of everyone in the household.

  • The mental load is invisible, exhausting, and way too real. It’s no wonder mums are burning out faster than a sparkler at a kids’ birthday party.

Why Mental Health Matters (And Why It comes last sometimes)
Here’s the thing: mums are the foundation of the family. And when the foundation cracks, the whole house starts to wobble. So why is it that society only pays attention to mums when they hit breaking point?

Mental health isn’t a luxury - it’s a necessity. When mums prioritize their mental well-being, it’s not selfish; it’s an investment in the next generation. Healthy mums raise healthy kids, and healthy kids grow into capable adults. It’s that simple.

But the problem is, many mums don’t feel like they can prioritize themselves. Between the societal pressure to "do it all" and the guilt that comes with asking for help, it’s easier to just push through - until you can’t anymore.

    The Cheeky Truth About Motherhood
Let’s call it what it is: motherhood is a mix of magic and madness. It’s the sleepless nights and the endless hugs. It’s negotiating with a three-year-old terrorist and crying over their baby photos five minutes later. It’s the joy of watching your kids grow and the heartbreak of realizing they don’t need you as much anymore.

But you can’t pour from an empty cup, no matter how much coffee you chug. That’s why prioritising your mental health isn’t just important - it’s essential.

    The Solution? A Stronger Village
So, what’s the answer? It starts with building a community - a real one, not just a bunch of memes in a Facebook group (though those are great too). It’s about mums supporting mums, sharing their stories, and lifting each other up.

That’s why I created the Mentally Strong Mums Podcast. It’s your virtual village, filled with relatable stories, expert advice, and practical tools to help you thrive - not just survive.
